Best Time to Trek in Nepal: A Season-by-Season Guide
Nepal can be trekked in every month of the year, but the experience changes a lot with the season. The two classic windows are spring (March to May) and autumn (late September to November). If you can only choose one, pick the one that fits your trek and your tolerance for crowds.
Quick answer
April and October are usually named the best months: clear skies, stable weather and the best mountain views. March, May, late September and November are also very good. Monsoon (June to August) and winter (December to February) are possible on selected routes with the right preparation.
Spring: March to May
Days are mild, the sky is mostly clear and the lower valleys fill with rhododendron and magnolia flowers. Spring is popular, so teahouses and flights get busy and prices are higher; book early. Haze can build up in the lowlands towards May, but the high views are usually still excellent.
Good for: Everest Base Camp, Annapurna Base Camp, Annapurna Circuit, Langtang Valley, Upper Mustang.
Autumn: September to November
After the monsoon the air is washed clean, so autumn gives some of the best visibility of the year. Weather is stable, though mornings and nights are freezing at altitude. This is the busiest season, especially October, and the Dashain and Tihar festivals can make transport busy.
Good for: every major trek, including the Manaslu Circuit, Annapurna Circuit and Everest Three High Passes.
Monsoon: June to August
Roughly 80 percent of Nepal’s yearly rain falls in about 105 days of the monsoon. Expect heavy rain, high humidity, landslides on some roads and leeches in low forests. The mountains are often hidden in cloud, but the landscape is green and the trails are quiet.
Better options in the rain: treks in the rain shadow such as Upper Mustang and Nar Phu, and shorter, lower routes such as Langtang Valley and Ghorepani Poon Hill, which are less affected. Pack waterproofs, gaiters and leech socks, and allow spare days for road delays.
Winter: December to February
Winter brings freezing nights, snow at higher camps and very clear days. Trails are quiet. At high altitude some teahouses close for the season, so choose routes carefully and bring a proper four-season sleeping bag and down jacket.
Good for: Ghorepani Poon Hill, Mardi Himal, Annapurna Base Camp (conditions permitting), Langtang Valley and shorter treks. Everest Base Camp can be done in winter by experienced, well-equipped trekkers.

How to choose your month
- Want the best views and do not mind crowds? Go in late October or early April.
- Want quieter trails? Try March, late November or the shoulder weeks of each season.
- Travelling in the rain months? Choose a rain-shadow trek or a lower, shorter route.
- Short on time? Pick a 4 to 7 day trek such as Poon Hill or Mardi Himal, which work in more months.
Packing tips by season
- Spring and autumn: layers, a warm down jacket for nights, sun protection.
- Monsoon: waterproof jacket and pack cover, quick-dry clothing, insect repellent.
- Winter: four-season sleeping bag, insulated boots, gloves and a warm hat.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best month to trek in Nepal?
April and October are the most reliable for clear weather and views.
Can I trek in Nepal during the monsoon?
Yes, on selected routes. Rain-shadow regions like Upper Mustang are far drier than the rest of the country.
Is it too cold to trek in winter?
Not with the right gear. Nights are very cold at altitude, but days are often sunny and clear. Choose lower-altitude routes if you are new to winter trekking.
How far ahead should I book?
For spring and autumn, book two to three months ahead so flights and lodges are secured. See all our trek packages or message us on WhatsApp.
